This short movie was produced to communicate scientific findings that describe the plurality of human-ocean relationships and their associated values on Yaeyama islands, Okinawa, Japan. Through a collaboration with local people, marine scientists and other various creators (manga artists, musicians, designers, cinematographers, etc.), this movie vividly conveys the “real bountifulness of mother ocean”. Our hope is to increase public awareness of the urgent need for coral reef conservation as climate change unfolds, which should also encourage relevant policy changes.

This film looks at how coastal communities across Canada and around the world are preparing for, and responding to, a range of climate change impacts and other hazards hitting the coast.

Coastal Communities… At the Ready is a new film that explores how coastal communities are preparing for, and responding to, a range of climate change impacts and other hazards hitting the coast. That includes everything from hurricanes and other extreme weather, to floods and erosion, to tsunamis and oil spills.

“Most of the world’s people live by the sea and are under the threat of a variety of marine hazards. Marine hazards are not new on the coast but they are becoming more common and more intense under the pressures of climate change. Where the sea meets the land in coastal communities, developing good responses to the impending threats is vitally important.” (from the film)

Coastal Communities… At the Ready combines global perspectives with the experiences of two Canadian coastal communities – Tofino and the District of Clare – to examine how communities can adapt to climate change, and prepare for hazards, with a focus on the tools and knowledge that can lead to success.

This 13-minute film will be of interest to all those concerned about living on the coast, making a living at sea, and dealing with climate change – including communities and community associations, citizen organizations, governments and policy-makers. The film, which is also suitable for school and university classrooms, provides a better understanding of the issues and challenges coastal communities face, and how they can overcome these challenges.

Produced by Nexus Media. Executive Producer: Anthony Charles. Funded by the Marine Environmental Observation, Prediction and Response Network (MEOPAR), the Community Conservation Research Network (CCRN) and Saint Mary’s University.

Here is the 2nd of CCRN’s animation videos… focusing on the ingredients of success for local communities engaged in environmental conservation, to make their communities, and their livelihoods, more sustainable for current and future generations.

This animation video explores what it takes for success… for local communities, in restoring ecosystems, safeguarding natural areas, diversifying economies, sustaining livelihoods… as well as for governments, and others, in better supporting those local communities.

Drawing on the experience of many local communities in conserving their environment while sustaining their livelihoods, a series of “lessons learned” are described – ones that can be relevant around the world.

In the summer of 2014, in partnership with the Community Conservation Research Network and the University of Victoria’s Science Venture program, Uu-a-thluk hosted science camps in several Nuu-chah-nulth communities with stewardship as a focus. Equipped with cameras, the children and youth went into their territories with the teachings of Nuu-chah-nulth stewardship principles and practices in mind. The images and statements they created show thought-provoking insights and ideas from this generation about taking care of our precious environment.
Across the Canadian Maritimes there are many unpublicized stories of coastal community heros, groups of people working together to protect the health of their fisheries, watersheds, and community heritage.

A Coastal Partnership is a documentary that focuses on two First Nations and two fishery associations: Lennox Island First Nation in Prince Edward Island and Bear River First Nation in Nova Scotia; the inshore fishery of southwest New Brunswick, and the independent clammers in Digby-Annapolis, Nova Scotia. Linked together through the Coastal CURA, members from these communities have been working with academics to identify what they need to become more involved in coastal management decisions.

Across the Canadian Maritimes there are many unpublicized stories of coastal community heros, groups of people working together to protect the health of their fisheries, watersheds, and community heritage. Each story provides important lessons about the role of local values, the realities of sharing space and access to resources, and the process of creating both formal and informal pathways for local participation in coastal management.

This film, a Coastal CURA capstone project, was produced as a collective effort, not only to share the perspectives of the four coastal communities but also to be used as a reflective tool for coastal community residents in general (both within the Canadian Maritimes and beyond). Moreover, the film contains success stories and important lessons about the role of local values, the realities of sharing space and access to resources, and the process of increasing local participation in coastal management.

Celebrating community involvement in marine conservation and management

Isle of Arran is a small island between Northern Ireland and Glasgow, United Kingdom. The Firth of Clyde was once a very rich and diverse source of wealth for coastal communities. Large industry and overfishing degraded the local fishery and now 99% of what fishers land is shellfish. However, the local communities banded together, with help from COAST, to help establish a large marine protected area.

COAST shared this video in celebration of World Oceans Day, highlighting their 20 years of community experience in making the case for responsible and fair management of our seas. Their hope is to inspire other communities to raise their voices and be involved in decisions about their seas. This is an inside story of how an island community is standing up for its dearest resource: the sea.
