In her MSc research, Laurel will contribute to the Kitasoo Xai’xais community-based fisheries monitoring initiative by aiming to answer the following research question:
How can culturally appropriate data on multi-species catch and effort for targeted species and bycatch be gathered to inform fisheries management decisions?
Two objectives that aim to answer this research question are:
(1) to understand past and present Kitasoo Xai’xais fisheries management and monitoring practices and preferred design of a catch monitoring program and
(2) to use these learnings to evaluate and pilot various data collection strategies that will inform the development of the Kitasoo Xai’xais multi-species catch monitoring program.
